The boys of SHINee were back in Singapore last Saturday (8 December) for their one-night only concert, SHINee World II. This was their second Asia tour, with Singapore being their fourth stop after Seoul, Taipei and Hong Kong. This concert marked the third time SHINee performed in Singapore this year (they were here in June for ‘Boys Night Out’ and most recently in November for the SM Town Live World Tour III).
SHINee – which consists of members Jonghyun, Key, Onew, Minho and Taemin – made their debut in 2008, and has since released 3 full-length albums to date. Their smooth R&B tunes and iconic fashion have made them into one of the most popular K-Pop idols to date.
On Saturday, SHINee performed to a packed screaming crowd, whose green glow-sticks illuminated the mosh pit around the stage. With a production budget of $1.8 million, SHINee fans were treated to a spectacular audio visual presentation featuring pyrotechnics, water fountains, aerial scenes, a fully mechanised stage and a multitude of costume changes.
The concert kicked off with ‘Lucifer’ (title track from their second album), followed by popular favourites like Amigo, The SHINee World, Hello, Replay, A-Yo, Ring Ding Dong, Love Like Oxygen and the title track from their latest album, Sherlock. In between, members of SHINee had their solo performances, with songs that ranged from ballads to dance, and a Lady Gaga number titled ‘Hair’ (performed by Key).
Almost every song had its own theme and setting, ranging from a futuristic space pod in ‘Lucifer’ to the illuminated squares of ‘Hello’.
During the concert, fans were encouraged to wear a yellow ribbon (which was provided) in their hair for the song ‘Tie A Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree’, during which SHINee members tossed a multitude of ‘dollar bills’ (each printed with the individual member’s face, name and birthday) towards the mosh pit fans.
After 3 encore numbers, the show closed with a birthday surprise for Onew and Minho, whose birthdays fall on December.
