The year so far has seen its fair share of Hollywood action, captivating musicals and thought-provoking thrillers (yes, I’m talking about you Get Out). Many of us go to the movies to de-stress and hand our consciousness over to the screen.
To prepare for the rest of the year, we’ve put together a list of selected movies that you can zone out to. By Violet Koh.
Movies that you can zone out to (in order of release date):
#1 Transformers: The Last Knight
Release Date: 22 June
Suitable for zoning out because: we’re still not sick of watching Bumblebee transform into a Chevy and the whole Transformers-saving-humanity trope.
In the fifth installment, Optimus Prime is gone (Shia Labeouf and Megan Fox still are, too) and humanity is at war with the Transformers. Mankind’s fate lies in the hands of Cade Yeager, Bumblebee, an English lord and an Oxford professor as they uncover secrets of the past to save the world (again).
#2 Spider-man: Homecoming
Release Date: 6 July
Suitable for zoning out because: this time, we don’t have to watch Uncle Ben die. Plus, Spidey gets Uncle Tony!
This is a reboot which follows the events of Captain America: Civil War (2016) where Peter Parker, the web-slinging Spiderman, attempts to balance high school and his superhero identity. His powers will be put to the test as the evil Vulture emerges.
#3 Kingsman: The Golden Circle
Release Date: 29 September
Suitable for zoning out because: apparently we enjoy crude humour and tailored suits. Oh and not forgetting cool spy stuff like steering a London cab underwater.
The sequel will have Eggsy, Merlin and Roxy team up with their American counterparts to once again, save the day. Having set the bar so high from its first film, let’s hope “The Golden Circle” will be able to match up and perhaps, be even better.
#4 Bladerunner 2049
Release Date: 5 October
Suitable for zoning out because: think The Fifth Element meets Tron Legacy – the cityscape and cinematography will have you enthralled.
Produced by Ridley Scott, director of The Martian, Alien: Covenant and the first installment of Bladerunner 35 years ago, the film takes place 30 years after the first movie, where LAPD Officer K will uncover a secret that leads him to find the missing Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford).
#5 Insidious: Chapter 4
Expected Release Date: 19 October
Suitable for zoning out because: by zoning out here, we actually mean keep your eyes peeled for every terrifying moment in this sequel.
Follow Dr. Elise Rainier as she faces her most fearsome haunting yet, between the walls of her own home.
#6 Jumanji
Expected Release Date: 21 December
Suitable for zoning out because: this will probably be just another ‘The Rock’ movie (Journey to the Center of the Earth, Baywatch, etc.).
This may come as a shocker, but the film is a sequel, not a remake. Four teenagers in detention will be transformed into avatars as they get sucked into the world of Jumanji, discovering what Alan Parrish left 20 years ago.
