Can you believe it’s been two years since Netflix arrived at our sunny shores?! For those of you who are unacquainted, where have you been all this time?! Netflix is the one stop entertainment subscription service that has made many a lonely night, filled with laughter, smiles and occasionally, tears. It has made binge-watching a breeze, especially on those lazy Friday nights when you just don’t feel like hitting the clubs or partying it up with your friends.
With hundreds of television shows and movies available at the click of a button, what’s not to love about Netflix, you may ask? Well, unlike our American counterpart, the selection that has been made available to us is rather limited.. It’s a shame we only have about 3,000 television shows and movies to choose from whereas Japan and Canada have over 5,000! We’re missing out on a whole lotta shows, I’m sure!
Here are some television shows and movies I personally think should be added for our viewing pleasure (it’s what we deserve, Netflix!):
1. The Big Bang Theory
The American television sitcom has amassed thousands of fans over the years, so the question I’d like to ask is.. why isn’t this available for the binge-watching pleasure of their fans in Singapore?!
With a total of 12 seasons, this would be perfect binge-watching material. It’s hilarious, geeky in a good way and there’s a cat in the show! What’s not to love about that? I personally would love to binge-watch another sitcom because I’m tired of rewatching How I Met Your Mother and Friends, and I’m sure there are people who would agree.
2. The Marvelous Mrs Maisel
From the producers of the iconic Gilmore Girls, the period drama has already won two Golden Globes and is set to premiere its second season this December. Set in the 1950s, it is about a housewife who discovers that she has a knack for stand up comedy. It is hopeful, witty and absolutely full of plot twists! That is what makes the recipe to a great television show, fit for ultimate binge-watching pleasure.
With a second season nearing its release, it would be a nice Christmas gift if Amazon Prime and Netflix could team up and air this gem of a show on Netflix now, wouldn’t it? But one can only dream, I suppose..
3. Coco
I might be a little biased here but I gotta say, I’ve been waiting for Coco to be released on Netflix Singapore for a while now. I know for a fact, that our American friends can enjoy it for their binge-watching pleasure for months now.. Netflix Singapore, I demand to know why it hasn’t been on our list yet!
In case you are one of the few who, unfortunately, did not get the opportunity to catch this
wonderful film in the cinema, this movie is an absolute delight to watch, with its vibrant, colourful scenes of Land of the Dead, where familial spirits of ancestors live on. It is touching, positively life-affirming, equipped with a lovely soundtrack. Let us have this heartwarming and family- friendly movie that we can watch on a quiet Sunday evening, Netflix Singapore, please! We’ve waited long enough.
4. The Handmaid’s Tale
Based on the best-selling novel by Margaret Atwood, the show has won 2 Golden Globes and it was only released a year ago. Set in a dystopian future, the story revolves around the life of a woman who has been made a concubine to a fundamentalist dictator. The show has been getting highly-raved reviews and it’s no surprise that there is already a third season in the works, which is exactly why more people should start binge-watching the first and second season, just in time for the third one!
5. Doctor Who
Personally, I’m not a fan of any television show or movie that is of the science fiction genre.. But if I ever were to become one, I think I’d start with Doctor Who. It has an interesting premise where a Time Lord travels through space and time to solve problems humankind faces or fight off any evil all in the name of justice. The show spans 11 seasons, with a stunning star-studded cast which includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Matt Smith and David Tennant, who play the Doctor in different seasons. It’ll take a while to finish 11 seasons though which makes it (once again) great for binge-watching.
And there you have it! I could go on forever, really. But I think these are all popular television shows and movies that everyone’s been waiting at the edges of their seats (or sofas…) for.
